Description
Desiree the Alien Engineer leaves her roommate Elle on Star-X and rides the Gold Sail over the Invisible Ether on a mission with Risk and Theo to learn why the Earth still lives when Venus lost its magnetosphere and died. For Desiree the mission is embodied in the V Medallion she wears, ever since she exchanged it for the E Medallion she left with Elle.
They land in the Yucatan, site of the Ring of Cenotes left by one of the two great meteor impacts on Earth. Arriving in 1519, they’re enslaved by the Mayan High Priest Kan Ek who’s at war with Moctezuma the Aztec King. When Cortes arrives, Kan Ek gives him Desiree as his guide and Theo and Risk as a shipwrecked Spanish priest and sailor. Velazquez the Governor of Cuba arrives soon after, putting Cortes and the aliens at war on two fronts.
Long after they steal the Royal Fifth of Gold bound for King Charles in Spain, we find Desiree and her companions in London during the Little Ice Age. She’s the mistress of Blackheath Manor and Risk and Theo are Barbary Pirates selling slaves from Ireland and Europe to Uthman Bay the Sultan of Morocco. Captain Pellow of the Royal Navy and Wilberforce the abolitionist are determined to stop them, but the aliens have powerful allies in Lord Fount Snelgrave and Reverend Doctor Nevil Mask the Royal Astronomer.
Taking Snelgrave’s beautiful daughter Baret as her ward, Desiree uses the underage girl to keep Wilberforce under her thumb, despite Baret’s crush on William Stiff the Royal Astronomer’s Naval Assistant. Using her engineering skills, Desiree designs the first Sea Clock she has built by her carpenter John Harris and gives it to Risk for him to use to outmaneuver Captain Pellow. At the Scientific Society Ball at Blackheath Manor the Captain’s exquisite wife Tyne Pellow hears stories of Risk the pirate and at Snelgrave’s Country House, Risk joins the fox hunt, posing an existential threat to Captain Pellow.
